Cuttlefish bone is commonly used as a calcium supplement for egg-laying animals, including birds, reptiles, and shelled invertebrates. For pet birds, it provides an important source of calcium that is often deficient in seed-based diets. It also offers a hard surface for birds to chew on, helping to keep their beaks naturally trimmed and preventing excessive growth.

Cuttlefish bone has long been used as a supplementary calcium source for tortoises and especially aquatic turtles, as it floats easily in water. Its primary components include calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, sodium chloride, magnesium salts, and a range of trace minerals. Although cuttlefish bone contains a high level of calcium, its absorption rate is relatively low. Therefore, it should be used as part of a balanced calcium supplementation program rather than as the sole source of dietary calcium.
